Rescuing a Blue Crown Conure

Diane sent this in.... I've been trying to rescue a Blue Crown Conure here in Joliet, Illinois for over a month now, unable to locate his family,so they can get him out of the cold nasty weather and back home. Most animal shelters, ect. only keep records briefly. A hawk has tried to get him several times but he out flew the hawk. One day a few small children saw the hawk chasing him and the kids started crying and saying"Fly Paulie, fly!",I could only pray that Paulie didn't tangle with this hawk in front of these little children.I need all the help I can get, as to finding his family and rescuing him the scarey outdoors. If you can help I would be greatful.

If you have any suggestions, email us at ParrotsNow, and we'll get in touch with Diane.

Lost African Grey - Georgia - August 2005

From Nancy....

I have had a african grey for the past 7 yrs. During a thunderstorm in Aug,2005, he escaped out of his cage and flew away into the woods. We hunted high and low and was never able to locate him.

I did everything everyone said to do, his cage is still outside and i still put food in it,I think i am most likly feeding all the wildlife in georgia. I even went so far as to buy another grey because i was told a new bird could lure him back. Well nothing worked and he is still out there.

I am asking for ideas because i live in a very woodsy area and i hear him every nite. He almost always comes near the house between 2 or 3 am. Almost every nite i hear him calling, Bongo, Hey Bongo, come here. I have logged near 200 hours crawling thru the woods looking for him and all i ever find is the poison ivy or the ticks.

Its been over 3 mths and im getting desperate to find him before it gets to cold for him to survive. The temps are in the thirties and he is still running around at night. The trees are thinning out an the hawks are flying around looking for a juicy meal. Bongo defies all logic to me. I have never seen him as he only seems to come out at night. When i call or sing to him he never opens his beak to say a word,as soon as i get back inside the house he will start chanting BONGO BONGO.A trap wont work because ive tried that to and all i ever catch is possom.HE IS DETERMINED NOT TO BE CAUGHT. Any suggestions anyone has will be greatly appreciated.

PS i think he spends all his time on the ground not in trees.

Dec. 13 Update:

Nancy wrote again....

UPDATE ! DEC. 13 - Nancy from Georgia, Well here is the latest on my grey Bongo. I still have not got my bird back but i still hear him every night at 2 am. It is now in the 20 to 30 degree nights, frost and ice are on my lawn and he is still running around at night.

He does not seem to want to come home no matter how cold it gets. I have purchased a night vision baby monitor and have set the camera by a cage i have set up with food and water. The small screen is in the house so i can watch for him to enter and the door to the cage is rigged for the door to close when he enters. This works great as i can see in the dark as to what enters the cage. I have spotted a possom and also a cat that is looking for a free meal.

So far Bongo has resisted my trap but hopefully he will get hungry enough to enter and i will be watching. I want to alert anyone who lost a bird that if they can afford to buy this monitor it works great. The cost is 149.00 u.s. dollars and you can see and hear everything outside day OR NIGHT while you sit inside your house. Its located in the nursery dept of your local dept store. It comes with camera, video monitor, and an extra sound monitor. I can now monitor Bongo coming and going. Hopefully i will catch him soon.

I know Bongo has survived the cold nights so far because i hear him every night. This update is to let anyone who lost their bird, they can survive out in the cold and never give up hope, after all Bongo has been gone for FOUR MONTHS and is still hanging around the perimeter and i KNOW HE IS STILL ALIVE. good luck to all who lost a bird.

Good luck, Nancy!

Lost Meyers Parrot - N. Carolina -Pennsylvania - August 2005

Pamela writes...

It's been two months sincy Hemmy flew away, but it seems like forever. He's a Meyers, and tho they're not touted to be particularly "good" talkers, Hemmy could certainly hold his own in Birdyville.

Hemingway - lost ParrotWe have a B&B, and make sure our feathered, outdoor guests have great breakfasts as well. Hemmy had learned to talk to the robins and cardinal family that nest here every year. (I wonder how well he would have mimicked the sound of the woodpecker that just relocated to our crabapple tree!). The cardinals are just about finished rearing their clutch, and every time they noisily visit the feeders, we all run to the door to see if it may be our Hemmingway, who has found his way from North Carolina back to PA.

No such luck. My son said there's a site, "lostpets.com" so, in desperation I visited it. No luck, but someone had posted that a cockatiel was found in Va. Beach at the Oceana Naval Base there. I checked your site, and no one from VB has posted, but afterall, birds do fly. I wondered if there's a way to cross reference it, in case it's one of the postings on your site. Thank you for what you do. You have a wonderful site.

Parrots Sited - Sept 2005

Clare is asking about parrots she spotted....

I have seen a pair of birds that I think are parrots as they have a hooked beak, very long tail and high squark. They have appeared as a couple over the last two days to eat pears in a neibouring garden. It is very difficult to say their colour as the sun is behind them but I think they are light green. They saw off a pair of magpies from the same tree. I am no bird expert but do enjoy watching my garden where we have robins, sparrows, pidgeons, doves, woodpeckers, blue tits and once a hawk. Could anyone advise me of what this bird may be? P.S. When it flys it is very fast and its wingspan looks like a bow.

Found Small Green Parrot - Montreal, Quebec, Canada - Sept 2005 -Reunited with owner

Egla wrote...

In the week of September 12, a small green parrot was found in the Outremont/Mile End area in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

If you lost your parrot around that time frame, please send me an e-mail that specifies the type of parrot lost and on what day. If you have a picture, please send that too, it will help in the identification process. Please include some sort of contact information so that if the parrot type and the date of your loss match I can contact you.

Egla sent this update...

The parrot we had found was actually reunited with its owners a few weeks ago now. She was a Quaker... She was not banded, that's why we had kept the description to a minimum to ensure the owners only would identify the unique spot she had.

He is a Slender-billed Conure, so he is green with a maroon tail and red at his eyes. His bill is also longer than normal and he is a bit overweight. He tires easily of flying. He can not speak but squaks very often.

Lost AND Found Senegal - Great Story

Patrick sent this story in...

I have a 6-year-old Senegal Parrot named Paulie. I have had him for five years. I am the only member of the family that Paulie allows to handle him. He says a few words. He is a great parrot.

Anyway, I brought him on vacation to my country house recently. I never had a need to clip his wings since I only let him out inside of my house. He flies from the cage to my shoulder, etc.

While up in the country, I pondered the idea of taking him out onto the front porch since he is so attached to me. I thought that maybe he would enjoy the outdoors yet stay close to me. He did! For about five minutes. He then took off flying into the tops of some very tall trees. It was a beautiful yet sad sight.

Immediately, I felt like an idiot for even trying such a stunt. Worst of all, my 11-year-old son was devastated. I tried calling his name that morning, but he never responded.

The next morning, I went outside in the front yard to see if I could see or hear Paulie. I could not. I then started to call his name. After a few calls of his name, he responded with a whistle. I discovered that although he moved from one section of trees to another on the other side of the yard, he was at least still on the property. I was hopeful. I could not see him since he was so high up and blended in so nicely with the green leaves. I could only hear him.

We kept calling each other back and forth for about 30 minutes. Finally, I decided to go inside for about a half hour. I then came back out and started calling his name again. He started answering back again, but he still did not appear from out of the treetops.

I figured that perhaps he could hear me but not see me, as I could only hear him but not see him. So, I decided to stand on the top of my six-foot high stone barbecue and start calling his name and waving my arms like a nut. I figured the motion and sound might attract his attention. We kept communicating with each other but we still did not see each other.

I then decided to try the same approach on the second floor deck in my front yard. I started calling "Paulie" and waving my arms like a nut. He would respond with his whistles, but not appear. At this point, in total, I must have been calling his name for about two hours.

Finally, I saw a green, yellowish/orange bellied bird fly from out of the tree tops, about 150 feet in front of me, and come right towards me. However about twenty feet before my front deck, he veered off to the right of the house into a nearby tree. I could clearly see Paulie in the tree. We kept communicating with each other.

He then took flight again and landed on the roof of the house. I, again like a nut, stood on the railing of the second floor deck and looked over the edge of the roof seeing Paulie sitting on the middle of the roof. I called his named several times, but he would not fly or walk over to me. He looked a little disheveled. I thought that maybe he was disoriented or mistrustful or mad at me for what might have been an ordeal for him or maybe not.

I ran and got some parrot food and climbed back onto the railing and threw some seeds at him to get his attention. He looked in my direction but did not move. I then thought that perhaps a larger piece of brightly colored fruit might attract his attention. So, I ran and cut a piece of an apple making sure to keep the red shiny skin on the cut piece.

I climbed back up on the railing of the second floor deck and threw the apple chunk onto the roof at Paulie. Paulie then took flight again, but this time he landed on the floor of the second floor deck. I then slowly climbed down off the railing and walked closer to Paulie putting another piece of the apple in front of the open sliding glass door on the deck. As he went for the apple chunk, I quickly moved the apple inside the sliding glass door. Paulie went inside of the house after the apple and I quickly closed the sliding glass door.

Incredibly, Paulie was back home. I was dumbfounded not only that he came back but also that I was crazy enough to persist in communicating with him to get him back. Anyway, I thought this true story might give someone looking for their parrot some crazy techniques. You never know, it just might work. It did for us.

Great! I love happy endings. Thanks for sharing that Patrick. -ParrotsNow
